Tibrogargan Circuit

Area: Tibrogargan trailhead & circuit

Secondary signature: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hour 30 minutes around the base of Tibrogargan. About 1 km / 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout with views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla. Casuarina, open eucalypt and melaleuca forest; peregrine falcons often seen. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This circuit is not the Tibrogargan summit route.

Do not pair: Do not pair this circuit with Yul-yan-man or with Tibrogargan / Beerwah summit routes. Pair with a picnic at the trailhead, Mountain View lookout only, or — if early and fit — Trachyte Circuit or a separate-car-park Ngungun morning, not a scramble.

Turnaround: Easy return from Mountain View lookout (~1 km / ~20 min). If the group is done, reverse to the car park. Completing the 4.1 km is optional.

  • Leaving the circuit to “just scramble a bit of Tibrogargan” without being an experienced climber on an official summit route.
  • Treating Coonowrin’s silhouette as a side trip. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.
  • Stacking the full circuit, Trachyte Circuit and Ngungun summit after a late Brisbane departure.
  • Grade 3 walking track (QPWS; re-check open status)
  • Allow 1 hr 30 min walking time (QPWS); about 20 min to Mountain View lookout
  • 4.1 km circuit (QPWS journeys hub; 1 km to Mountain View lookout; re-checked 2026-09-13)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Families and first visits — lookout views without a summit scramble

Where you start

Tibrogargan trailhead

Start and finish at the Tibrogargan trailhead via Marshs Road and Barrs Road, between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains townships. Picnic tables and toilets beside the car park, including a wheelchair-accessible cubicle. Circuit does not require a car shuffle.

How to get there

  1. From Brisbane: Bruce Highway north, Glass House Mountains tourist drive / Steve Irwin Way, then Marshs Road and Barrs Road to the Tibrogargan trailhead. Sealed 2WD. Separate from Ngungun, Beerburrum and Beerwah trailheads — no through-road across the park.
  2. Parking, picnic tables and toilets (including a wheelchair-accessible cubicle) at the trailhead. Arrive early on weekends.
  3. Limited public transport; Beerburrum station is nearer the Beerburrum trailhead than this one. Most visitors drive.
  4. Screenshot maps and Park Alerts in town. QPWS does not publish a blanket coverage map.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Use the toilets, clean footwear for dieback, carry water even on a Grade 3 circuit — summer heat still applies at the base.
  2. Walk the short climb to Mountain View lookout first (about 1 km, allow 20 minutes). Views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.
  3. Continue around the base through casuarina groves, open eucalypt and melaleuca forest. Peak profiles change as you circuit. Watch for peregrine falcons soaring above the plug.
  4. Complete the circuit back to the trailhead, or reverse from the lookout if that is the whole outing. Do not leave the circuit to attempt the Tibrogargan summit unless you are an experienced climber on an official summit route — this site does not sell those climbs. Traditional Owners ask visitors to refrain from climbing the mountains.

What to expect

Tibrogargan Circuit is the park’s secondary signature and the honest family walk: you go around the father mountain, you do not have to go up it. Official journeys copy (re-checked 2026-09-13): Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hour 30 minutes. A short climb reaches Mountain View lookout in about 1 km / 20 minutes, with views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply.

Beyond the lookout the track continues around the base through casuarina groves, open eucalypt forest and melaleuca. The plug’s profile changes as you move. Official notes say peregrine falcons are often seen soaring here — watch, do not drone, do not throw food. This is real bushwalking on uneven ground, not a sealed promenade, but it is a different class of day from Ngungun’s cliff-edge Grade 4 or Yul-yan-man’s Grade 5 scramble.

What this walk is not: the Tibrogargan summit route. Official advice is that Beerwah and Tibrogargan summit routes are for experienced climbers only. This site does not sell those climbs. Traditional Owners request consideration around climbing certain sacred peaks; Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples do not climb these mountains and ask visitors to refrain. Walking the circuit is the respectful, published, family-scale way to be at this trailhead.

How the day works

Start at the Tibrogargan trailhead between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains townships, via Marshs Road and Barrs Road. Same car park for the circuit, Trachyte Circuit and one end of Yul-yan-man / the shared trail — which is why weekend mornings fill. Picnic tables and toilets including a wheelchair-accessible cubicle sit beside the car park. That accessibility note is for the cubicle, not a promise that the circuit is an all-abilities path.

No day-entry fee listed on official pages (re-checked 13 September 2026) — confirm live. No camping in this national park. No walk permit for the graded circuit. Dogs stay home unless they are certified assistance animals. Clean footwear. Daylight recommended.

Operator pattern: lookout first while legs are fresh and light is kinder for the panorama. Decide at the lookout whether the remaining circuit is still a pleasure. Families often reverse here and picnic. Fit groups continue. If you still want Jack Ferris lookout, that is Trachyte Circuit (5.7 km return, Grade 3, allow 2–3 hours) — a second objective, not a free extra you discover at 3 pm.

Hazards and realism

Standard bushwalking: heat, uneven surfaces, slippery roots after rain, the odd snake on a sunny edge. Carry water. The dark rock of Tibrogargan stores and throws heat; a “short Grade 3” still cooks an under-prepared family in January.

The serious hazard is temptation. People see a summit route or a social-media line and leave the circuit. Official: only experienced climbers for Tibrogargan and Beerwah summit routes. Rescues happen in this park. Watch the official safety video. Stay on the signed circuit unless you already know you are on a published climber route with the skill to match — and even then, cultural requests to refrain from climbing stand. This page will not talk you onto the summit.

Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply. Do not enter. Do not climb. Do not treat a viewpoint of Coonowrin as permission to approach the peak. *Phytophthora* dieback: clean footwear. No campfires. Coverage is not guaranteed; 000 needs reception; Emergency+ on the phone before you leave town.

Turning around and bail-outs

Mountain View lookout is the designed reverse: about 1 km, about 20 minutes, real views, easy return to toilets and picnic tables. That is a successful family visit. Completing 4.1 km is optional pride.

If weather closes in or someone is struggling on the far side of the circuit, stay on the signed track back to the trailhead. Do not cut under the mountain or toward Coonowrin. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.

If you arrived late from Brisbane, do the lookout only. Save Ngungun for a morning with 2 hours of honest walking time. Do not “make up” a missed summit by scrambling Tibrogargan.

Grip, water, sun and a charged phone are packing notes for this walk — kit searches live on the gear hub, not as a product wall on the trail page.

Extra tips

  • Best family walk in this national park when you want views without Grade 4/5 rock.
  • Short on time or energy: lookout and return is a complete visit.
  • Jack Ferris lookout on Trachyte Circuit is a longer Grade 3 add-on from the same trailhead — only if the group still has 2–3 hours.
  • Do not confuse “we walked around Tibrogargan” with “we climbed Tibrogargan”.

Often paired with Trachyte Circuit— only if energy and weather allow.
