Mount Beerburrum Summit Walk
Area: Beerburrum summit & Yul-yan-man country
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, Restricted Access, fire restrictions and …
Grade 3, 3.5 km return, allow 1.5 hours from Beerburrum trailhead beside Beerburrum State School. After about 1 km the track becomes a very steep paved pathway (about 750 m of steep concrete that can be slippery) to a fire tower at about 280 m. Views, not a family amble. Not Coonowrin (Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines).
Do not pair: Do not pair with Yul-yan-man the same day unless you already know both tracks and started at dawn with full Grade 5 kit — default is one or the other. Never pair with Coonowrin. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.
Turnaround: The steep concrete is the decision. If it is wet or the group is spent, reverse to the forest section and the car. Same path down.
- Sneakers on wet concrete.
- Treating the fire tower as a warm-up for Yul-yan-man on the same morning.
- Grade 3 walking track (QPWS; steep concrete section; re-check open status)
- Allow 1 hr 30 min (QPWS)
- 3.5 km return (QPWS journeys hub; re-checked 2026-09-13)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Fit walkers wanting fire-tower views from a shorter Grade 3 peak walk

Where you start
Beerburrum trailhead (adjacent to Beerburrum State School car park)
Return walk on the same path. Park considerately beside school use. Same trailhead pattern as Yul-yan-man (Beerburrum end) and the shared trail toward Tibrogargan.
How to get there
- Beerburrum trailhead is adjacent to the Beerburrum State School car park — sealed 2WD from Steve Irwin Way / local streets. Do not block school operations.
- Closest station in the official access story is Beerburrum; most visitors still drive. About 70 km / 1 hour from Brisbane via the Bruce Highway.
- No through-road to Ngungun or Beerwah trailheads. Separate car parks.
How to do it (step by step)
- Clean footwear. Wear ankle-supporting shoes with good grip — official caution on the concrete.
- The track winds through wet eucalypt forest into drier open forest. After about 1 km it becomes a very steep paved pathway. Pace yourself. Reasonable fitness required.
- The fire tower is used to detect and manage fires through surrounding parks and forests. Stay off infrastructure that is not a public viewing platform; follow signs.
- Return the same way. Do not add Yul-yan-man because you still feel fresh at the tower.
What to expect
Official journeys copy (re-checked 2026-09-13): Grade 3, 3.5 km return, allow 1 hour 30 minutes. Forest first, then a very steep paved pathway to a fire tower on Mount Beerburrum (280 m above sea level). About 750 m of that concrete can be slippery. Wear ankle-supporting shoes with good grip. Reasonable fitness — pace yourself. Views, then the same steep path down.
This is a complete walk, not a footnote. It is still not Yul-yan-man and not a cultural-free “anyone can climb every plug” message. Traditional Owners ask visitors to refrain from climbing these mountains; QPWS still publishes this graded fire-tower walk. Stay on the signed line. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.
How the day works
Park at the Beerburrum trailhead next to the school car park. Clean boots, water, sun hat. Morning is kinder on the concrete. No camping in this national park; no day-entry fee listed on official pages when last checked (confirm live); no walk permit.
If you wanted scrambling, you wanted Yul-yan-man — a different grade and a different kit list from this same trailhead. Pick one.
Hazards and realism
Slippery steep concrete is the headline. Heat and tired knees on the descent are next. Dieback footwear. Variable coverage. Watch the official safety video if this is your first Glass House peak day.
Turning around
Turn around on the same path at any point. If the paved section is a skating rink, the forest kilometre was enough. Do not cut a dirt shortcut beside the concrete.
Grip, water, sun and a charged phone are packing notes for this walk — kit searches live on the gear hub, not as a product wall on the trail page.

Extra tips
- Shorter than Yul-yan-man; still a real climb because of the steep concrete.
- Concrete is slippery when wet — reverse early after rain.
- School days: extra courtesy on parking and speed.
Often paired with Yul-yan-man— only if energy and weather allow.
