Glass House Mountains trails & lookouts

Pick one main walk that matches fitness, weather and daylight. Ngungun covers most fit first visits; Tibrogargan Circuit covers most families. Distances, grades and times below are planning figures — always confirm on Queensland Parks and Park Alerts. Weather and closures change. Mount Coonowrin is Restricted Access — closed, fines.

Decide before you start

  • Easy / short: Mountain View lookout on Tibrogargan Circuit (~1 km / 20 min) plus Glass House Mountains Lookout (state forest).
  • Moderate first walk: full Tibrogargan Circuit (4.1 km, Grade 3) or Beerburrum summit if you want a steep Grade 3.
  • Signature summit: Ngungun — Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours. Early start; daylight only.
  • Experienced only: Yul-yan-man (Grade 5 scrambling). Skip if rain, fire or extreme heat.

Stacking two long walks plus a “quick look” at closed Coonowrin is how first visits fail. Pick the row that matches your energy, then open the walk page for getting-there detail.

hard

Grade 5 substantial walk on Trachyte Range: rock scrambling, exposed slippery rock, sheer edges, heat radiation off stone. Pink triangular markers. Do not start if rain is predicted, fire is visible, or the weather is extremely hot. Yul-yan-man, from the Kabi Kabi language, means “walk slowly” — present that name respectfully. Not a summit of Coonowrin (Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines) and not a family circuit.

Trails FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What is the best first walk in the Glass House Mountains?

Fit first visits usually start with Ngungun Summit (Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours). Families and mixed groups should start with Tibrogargan Circuit — Grade 3, 4.1 km, or about 1 km / 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout. Always verify track status with Queensland Parks.

How hard is Ngungun Summit?

Officially Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow about 2 hours. Expect steep rock, cliff edges and very slippery surfaces when wet. It is not a family stroll and not a Coonowrin approach. Turn back at the first viewpoint if rain, cloud or nerves say so.

Can I do Ngungun, Tibrogargan Circuit and Yul-yan-man in one day?

Usually too much, even for a fit Brisbane day-trip. Separate trailheads mean extra driving. Yul-yan-man alone is Grade 5 with rock scrambling. Pick one main walk, then add a lookout only if energy and daylight still look honest.
