Things to do in the Glass House Mountains

Most first visits pick one: Ngungun Summit for the classic plug panorama, or Tibrogargan Circuit (with a short Mountain View lookout option) plus the state-forest lookout. Grade 5 Yul-yan-man is a different commitment. The shared trail (walk / run / MTB) between Beerburrum and Tibrogargan is a separate day type — not an add-on to a first Ngungun visit. Mount Coonowrin is Restricted Access — closed, fines. Camping is not permitted inside this national park. One main objective at a time.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry fees and official Queensland Parks camping bookings are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pick one trailhead (usually Ngungun Summit, or Tibrogargan Circuit + lookout). Do not stack Yul-yan-man onto a first afternoon. Mount Coonowrin is closed — fines apply.

Weather / energy bail-out

Volcanic rock is very slippery when wet. Turn back at the first viewpoint if rain, cloud or nerves say so. Families can reverse from Mountain View lookout without guilt.

Hard walk filter

Yul-yan-man is Grade 5 — earned, not a collection tick. One honest walk is enough for most Brisbane day-trips. Separate trailheads mean a car shuffle if you try two peaks.

  1. 1

    Mount Ngungun Summit Walk

    Signature · Grade 4 · 2.8 km return · ~2 hr

Signature first-visit summit: Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours. Progressive views of Tibrogargan, then Coonowrin and Beerwah. Separate sealed trailhead ~3 km from the township. Official also lists Ngungun for moderate roped sports (20–40 m) — that is a different activity, and altering bolts without QPWS authority is prohibited. Not a family scramble and not a Coonowrin approach.

  2. 2

    Tibrogargan Circuit

    Family default · Grade 3 · 4.1 km · ~1.5 hr

Family-honest first walk: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1.5 hours, with a ~1 km / 20 min option to Mountain View lookout. Picnic tables and toilets (including accessible) at the trailhead. This circuit is not the Tibrogargan summit climb.

  3. 3

Glass House Mountains Lookout (state forest)

Drive-up views · not this NP · separate car park

Classic plug panorama from adjoining Beerburrum West State Forest — a different tenure, different car park. Pair with Tibrogargan Circuit; do not treat it as a walking-track bail-out from Ngungun. BBQs at this lookout are closed 20 Aug 2026–21 Feb 2027 (official alert). Mount Coonowrin remains closed.

  4. 4

    Trachyte Circuit

    Lookouts · Grade 3 · 5.7 km return · 2–3 hr

Grade 3, 5.7 km return, allow 2–3 hours from the Tibrogargan trailhead. Open woodland and heath to Jack Ferris lookout on Trachyte Ridge. A longer second walk — not a cool-down after Ngungun.

  5. 5

    Mount Beerburrum Summit Walk

    Steep Grade 3 · 3.5 km return · ~1.5 hr

Grade 3, 3.5 km return, allow 1.5 hours. After about 1 km the path becomes a very steep paved section (~750 m of concrete that polishes in rain) to a fire tower. Park considerately beside school use. Not Coonowrin.

  6. 6

    Yul-yan-man (experienced only)

Grade 5 · scrambling · skip if rain or extreme heat

Grade 5 rock scrambling on Trachyte Range. Pink triangular markers. Extra water, a clear leave-by time, optional PLB. Name from Kabi Kabi language — “walk slowly.” Not a first-afternoon add-on and not a Coonowrin approach.

  7. 7

Shared trail — walk, run, mountain bike

    Shared trail · verify official · not a walking-track add-on

Official recreation besides the walking tracks: a published shared trail links Beerburrum and Tibrogargan trailheads (walking, running, MTB touring). Horses belong on the official horse-riding alignments only. Bikes and horses stay off pure walking tracks — not Ngungun, not the circuit, not Yul-yan-man.

  8. 8

Wildlife & plant communities (etiquette first)

Year-round · no feeding · stay on track

Peregrine falcons around Tibrogargan, kookaburras, open-forest and heath communities on the plugs. Distance is respect. Never feed. Do not drone-harass raptors. Stay on track — thin soil on trachyte does not bounce back from shortcut photos.

  9. 9

    Cultural respect on Country

Respect · Restricted Access · official sources primary

Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara connections. Traditional Owners ask visitors not to climb sacred peaks. Mount Coonowrin is Restricted Access — closed, on-the-spot fines. Stay on published tracks; do not make up ceremony.

  10. 10

Picnic, visitor centre & nearby camping

    Day-use · no in-park camping · official bookings only

Day-use tables and toilets at Tibrogargan (accessible cubicle; path is concrete, gravel and grass) and Beerwah trailhead (toilets ~100 m from that car park). Township visitor centre is outside the park — hours not locked here. Camping is not permitted inside this national park. Nearby booked camp is Coochin Creek in Beerwah State Forest — not this national park.
