Tibrogargan trailhead & circuit

Secondary signature and the family-honest first walk: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1.5 hours, with a 1 km / ~20 min option to Mountain View lookout. Picnic tables and toilets (including accessible) at the car park. Trachyte Circuit and Yul-yan-man also start from this node — they are different days.

  • Best for: Families and first visits who want views without a summit scramble
  • Time: 1–2 hours for lookout or circuit; 2–3 hours if you add Trachyte only with remaining energy
  • Marshs Road and Barrs Road, between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains townships. Sealed 2WD. Separate from Ngungun and Beerburrum trailheads.

Why most mixed groups should start here

Tibrogargan trailhead is the park’s practical day-use hub: toilets, picnic tables, and a Grade 3 circuit around the base of the father mountain. Official copy: 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hour 30 minutes; about 1 km and 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout. You walk through casuarina, open eucalypt and melaleuca. Peak profiles change as you circuit. Peregrine falcons are often seen.

You will see Coonowrin. You will not go there. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply. Do not enter. Traditional Owners ask visitors not to climb sacred peaks. Present that as a request to respect, not as folklore filler. This independent guide does not speak for Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi or Jinibara people.

If Ngungun is the “we came for the summit panorama” product, this is the “we came with mixed fitness and still want the plugs” product. Do Mountain View first so you still have a win if the group is done.

Three walking products, one car park

Lookout-only: Mountain View and reverse. About 1 km / 20 minutes. Complete family visit. Views typically include Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla (the Twins). Supervise at any drop.

Circuit: 4.1 km around the base, Grade 3, allow 1.5 hours. Honest first walk for groups who already handle Grade 3 uneven ground and heat. It is not a pram loop and not an all-abilities path, even though the trailhead has an accessible toilet cubicle.

Trachyte Circuit: 5.7 km return, Grade 3, allow 2–3 hours, Jack Ferris lookout on Trachyte Ridge. Same trailhead, longer day. Doing lookout + circuit + Trachyte + Ngungun is a fantasy itinerary. Pick one primary walk.

Circuit versus the Tibrogargan summit route

The published walking product on this page is the base circuit and Mountain View lookout. A separate official summit-route map describes a climb from Mountain View lookout continuing about 300 m up the western slope — loose unstable rock, a signed “no waiting zone” (rockfall risk), then a near-vertical rockface to the summit at about 364 m. Official profile language compares that climb to about 76 storeys of a high-rise.

That is not a family add-on. It is not the Grade 3 circuit. Queensland Parks publishes the request from Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples not to climb the culturally sacred Beerwah and Tibrogargan peaks. This guide does not sell the summit scramble as a default “tick.” Stay on the circuit unless you are an experienced party who has already read the official summit-route information, accepted the cultural request, and verified live conditions.

Do not drone-harass peregrine falcons. Do not leave the circuit for a “better angle” of Coonowrin.

Shared trail toward Beerburrum

Beerburrum and Tibrogargan trailheads are linked by a published shared trail used for mountain biking, walking and running (Soldier Settlers section and related alignments). That is a different product from the Tibrogargan Circuit walking track.

Horses and bikes are not permitted on pure walking tracks. If you came to ride, use the shared trail and official horse/MTB pages — not the circuit, not Ngungun, not Yul-yan-man’s walking alignment.

Yul-yan-man can also be accessed in variants from this geography. Grade 5 rock-scrambling. Extra water, charged phone, consider a PLB, no rain/fire/extreme heat. Official: Tibrogargan start about 13.4 km return, allow 4–5 hours (journeys hub, re-checked 13 September 2026). Not for beginners. Official safety video first.

Facilities

Picnic tables and toilets beside the car park, including a toilet cubicle for people using wheelchairs. The path to that cubicle is concrete, gravel and grass — assistance may be required. The 4.1 km circuit is not an all-abilities walking path.

This is the best “we need a table and a toilet” node in the national park. Beerwah trailhead is the other picnic/toilet campus (toilets ~100 m from that car park). Ngungun is not.

No camping in this national park. Coochin Creek (Beerwah State Forest) is a separate official camping product via qld.gov.au/camping. No campfires in this national park.

Access, heat and weekend fill

Steve Irwin Way corridor, then Marshs Road and Barrs Road, between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains townships. Sealed 2WD. Weekend mornings fill. There is no through-park drive to Ngungun — that is a separate car park via Coonowrin Road and Fullertons Road.

Beerburrum station is nearer the Beerburrum trailhead than this one. Most visitors still drive. Screenshot maps and Park Alerts in town.

Carry water even on Grade 3 — heat at the base of a dark plug is real. QPWS does not publish a blanket coverage map. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. Clean footwear on entry and exit for Phytophthora dieback. Stay on the published track so you do not tramp the thin soil communities on the plugs.

Who this area is for

Families, first Brisbane day-trips, photographers who want changing plug profiles without Grade 4 edges, groups who need toilets and a table. Poor fit: anyone who came only to climb Coonowrin, anyone expecting a pram loop, anyone treating Yul-yan-man as the afternoon after the circuit.

If the group still has energy after Mountain View, finish the 4.1 km circuit or switch to Trachyte only with a honest 2–3 hours remaining. Otherwise picnic and leave. That is already a successful hinterland morning.

Yul-yan-man

hard

Grade 5 substantial walk on Trachyte Range: rock scrambling, exposed slippery rock, sheer edges, heat radiation off stone. Pink triangular markers. Do not start if rain is predicted, fire is visible, or the weather is extremely hot. Yul-yan-man, from the Kabi Kabi language, means “walk slowly” — present that name respectfully. FAQ — Tibrogargan

Short planning answers. Official Queensland Parks signs and park alerts always win over this guide.

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is Tibrogargan Circuit OK for kids?

Often yes if they already walk Grade 3 uneven bush and you will reverse from Mountain View lookout. Supervise at any drop. Not a pram or wheelchair circuit, even though the trailhead has an accessible toilet cubicle.

Can I climb Tibrogargan from the circuit?

The published product on this page is the base circuit and lookout. A separate official summit route from Mountain View lookout is a high-risk scramble (loose rock, no-waiting/rockfall zone, near-vertical face; official profile ~76 storeys). Traditional Owners ask visitors not to climb sacred Tibrogargan and Beerwah. Stay on the circuit unless you are an experienced party on an official route who has already read that request.

Is Coonowrin part of this walk?

No. You will see it. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply. Do not enter.

Is there camping at the trailhead?

No. Camping is not permitted inside Glass House Mountains National Park. Nearby Coochin Creek (state forest) is booked only via qld.gov.au/camping or 13 13 04.

Can I ride a mountain bike on Tibrogargan Circuit?

No. Horses and bikes are not permitted on pure walking tracks. Use the published shared trail between Beerburrum and Tibrogargan trailheads for MTB touring, walking and running — verify the live horse/MTB pages.

How far is Yul-yan-man from this car park?

Official journeys hub (re-checked 13 September 2026): Tibrogargan start about 13.4 km return, allow 4–5 hours, Grade 5. Not a family add-on. Extra water, charged phone, consider a PLB. Confirm signed distances on the day.
