Two-peak day: Ngungun + Tibrogargan (honest stacking)

Full day with a pre-dawn start and a hard daylight finishBest for: Fit groups who already know one trailhead and will turn around in time

Ngungun Summit first, then Tibrogargan Circuit — or swap the second peak for Beerburrum summit / Trachyte Circuit / Jack Ferris — only with an early start, separate car parks, and no Grade 5 add-on.

Two peaks in one day is easy to overdo. The honest version is Ngungun Summit (Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hr) while rock and crowds are cooler, then a drive to a second, easier walk: Tibrogargan Circuit (Grade 3, 4.1 km, allow 1 hr 30 min), or Beerburrum summit (Grade 3, 3.5 km return, allow 1 hr 30 min, steep concrete), or Trachyte Circuit (Grade 3, 5.7 km, allow 2–3 hr) with Jack Ferris lookout.

Separate trailheads mean the “rest” between peaks is a drive, navigation, parking and another dieback clean — not a trail junction. Budget that time. If Ngungun runs long, wet, or hot, the second peak is cancelled. That is the plan working.

Do not add Yul-yan-man. Do not add Coonowrin. Do not start the second walk after 2 pm in summer and call it a two-peak day. Watch the official safety video. Carry water for two efforts.

Day entry free — confirm live. No camping in this national park. Always re-check Park Alerts the morning you leave. Unofficial planning only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Early start — do not pile too much in

Watch the safety video. Check alerts and heat. Agree: Peak 1 = Ngungun; Peak 2 = Tibrogargan Circuit unless you pre-chose Beerburrum summit or Trachyte / Jack Ferris. Written cancel rules: wet rock on Ngungun, anyone distressed, or finish of Peak 1 after your cut-off time. Pack 2 L+ per peak-equivalent, sun kit, first aid, offline maps for both car parks.

  2. Pre-dawn / dawn

    Ngungun trailhead first

Coonowrin Road / Fullertons Road. Clean footwear. Grade 4 summit, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours plus photos. Cliffs: stay on track, supervise, no wet-rock heroics. This peak is the heat/crowd filter — if you cannot start it early, you do not have a two-peak day; you have a one-peak day.

  3. Mid-morning

Decision gate at the Ngungun car

Drink, food, honest energy check. If the group is cooked, township lunch and home is a good day. If you still have daylight, drive to the second trailhead — there is no walking link. Re-clean footwear as you leave and again as you enter.

  4. Late morning

Second peak — one of three

Default: Tibrogargan Circuit or the short Mountain View lookout (toilets, picnic). Alternative A: Beerburrum summit from the school-adjacent trailhead — 750 m of steep concrete that can be slippery; fire-tower views; 3.5 km return. Alternative B: Trachyte Circuit from Tibrogargan — 5.7 km, Jack Ferris lookout on the Trachyte Range. Pick one. Not all three.

  5. Lunch

Tibrogargan tables or township — not on a cliff

Eat at facilities, not on summit edges. Do not feed wildlife. Recalculate daylight. The second walk’s descent still counts as effort.

  6. Afternoon

    No third product

Optional state-forest Glass House Mountains Lookout only if both walks finished early and the group is still kind. No Yul-yan-man. No Beerwah scramble. No Coonowrin. Pack up while you still have highway attention.

  7. Leave

    Daylight reverse

Dieback clean. Fuel if needed in Beerwah. Southbound or hinterland stay — this national park has no camping. Coochin Creek (Beerwah State Forest) only if you already booked via qld.gov.au/camping.

Packing

  • Grip shoes that still work on steep concrete and rock
  • Water for two efforts (2 L+ each, more in heat)
  • Sun kit + spare socks
  • Electrolyte snacks + real lunch
  • First aid + blister kit
  • Charged phone + power bank
  • Rain shell
  • Headlamp backup

Parking & access tips

  • Two car parks in one day: Ngungun first, then Tibrogargan or Beerburrum — do not leave a car at the wrong peak.
  • Beerburrum trailhead is next to the state school — courtesy on school days.
  • Tibrogargan has the better picnic/toilet node for a second-peak lunch.
  • Weekend stacks fail at parking — arrive earlier or drop to one peak.
  • Do not leave valuables visible in either car.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Cannot start Ngungun early
  • Rain, fire, extreme heat, or wet rock
  • Adding Yul-yan-man as peak three
  • First-ever visit with mixed fitness and no leave-by time
  • Mount Coonowrin — Restricted Access, closed, fines

Extra tips

Do not pile too much into one day

  • Peak 1 is Ngungun and it must finish with margin
  • Peak 2 is one Grade 3 product, not a menu
  • Separate trailheads always cost time — count the drive
  • Cancel Peak 2 without guilt; that is competence

Second-peak menu (pick one)

  • Tibrogargan Circuit or Mountain View lookout — best facilities
  • Beerburrum summit — steep concrete, fire tower, school-adjacent start
  • Trachyte Circuit / Jack Ferris lookout — longer Grade 3 from Tibrogargan
  • Never Coonowrin; never Grade 5 on the same calendar day for most groups

What success looks like

  • Two complete, on-track walks or one walk plus an honest cancel
  • No cliff-edge stupidity for a two-peak photo
  • Daylight finish; footwear cleaned twice
  • Group still willing to come back

  • Mount Ngungun Summit WalkPrimary signature walk: Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours from the Ngungun trailhead. Open forest with fern understorey, a viewpoint of Tibrogargan, a small rock overhang, then summit views of Tibrogargan, Coonowrin and Beerwah (Ngungun is about 253 m). Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This is a graded summit walk, not a family stroll and not a technical climb.
  • Tibrogargan CircuitSecondary signature: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hour 30 minutes around the base of Tibrogargan. About 1 km / 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout with views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla. Casuarina, open eucalypt and melaleuca forest; peregrine falcons often seen. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This circuit is not the Tibrogargan summit route.
  • Mount Beerburrum Summit WalkGrade 3, 3.5 km return, allow 1.5 hours from Beerburrum trailhead beside Beerburrum State School. After about 1 km the track becomes a very steep paved pathway (about 750 m of steep concrete that can be slippery) to a fire tower at about 280 m. Views, not a family amble. Not Coonowrin (Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines).
  • Trachyte CircuitGrade 3, 5.7 km return, allow 2–3 hours from Tibrogargan trailhead. Open woodland and heathland linking Tibrogargan and Tibberoowuccum. Jack Ferris lookout on the northern end of Trachyte Ridge. Trachyte is a volcanic rock that forms many of these plugs. Not a Coonowrin access track — Restricted Access Area, public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines.
