Family circuit: Mountain View lookout & Glass House Mountains Lookout
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
Tibrogargan Circuit short option to Mountain View lookout (~1 km / 20 min, or the full 4.1 km Grade 3 circuit), picnic at the trailhead, then Glass House Mountains Lookout in adjoining Beerburrum West State Forest — not a Ngungun or Yul-yan-man day.

You do not need a summit scramble to have a real Glass House Mountains day. This family-easy plan uses the Tibrogargan trailhead — toilets, picnic tables (some accessible) — then a state-forest lookout with the classic panorama of the plugs.
Official Tibrogargan Circuit: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hr 30 min. The short option is 1 km / about 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout, with views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla (orientation re-checked 13 September 2026). Reverse from the lookout without guilt if kids are done.
Glass House Mountains Lookout is not inside this national park. It sits in adjoining Beerburrum West State Forest — a separate drive, separate car park, panoramic views. Do not treat it as a walking-track bail-out from Tibrogargan; you will need the car.
Day entry to the national park is free — confirm on parks.qld.gov.au before you travel; this site does not sell tickets. No camping in this national park. Always check Park Alerts and a regional forecast the morning you leave. This itinerary is planning guidance only — not live track status.
Track status, weather, camping availability and road conditions change — verify on Queensland Parks and live road sources before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day use does not mean free camping or empty car parks on holidays.

Timeline
Night before
Alerts, video, leave-by time
Open parks.qld.gov.au/parks/glass-house-mountains, Park Alerts, and the official safety video (six minutes). Agree out loud: primary = Mountain View lookout + picnic; optional = rest of Tibrogargan Circuit only if energy remains; then the state-forest lookout. Not Ngungun. Not Coonowrin (Restricted Access — closed, fines). Pack water, sun kit, enclosed shoes, snacks kids will eat. Set a hard “leave the peaks by” time — daylight only.
Morning
Drive to Tibrogargan trailhead
From Brisbane allow about 70 km / 1 hour in light traffic via the Bruce Highway and Glass House Mountains tourist drive / Steve Irwin Way, then Marshs Road and Barrs Road. Separate sealed trailheads — this car park is not Ngungun or Beerwah. Fuel and snacks in Beerwah or similar before you commit. Screenshot maps on town Wi-Fi.
0:00–0:20
Arrive, toilets, clean footwear
Park without blocking picnic or access. Toilets (including a wheelchair-accessible cubicle) and picnic tables beside the car park. Clean soil off footwear, poles and packs before you start — Phytophthora dieback etiquette, in and out. Read signed distance, grade and precautions together. No pets in the national park.
0:20–0:50
Mountain View lookout (short option)
About 1 km, allow 20 minutes to the lookout. Supervise children; this is still bushwalking on uneven ground, not a playground path. Name the peaks you can see — and say Coonowrin is closed. If the group is happy, stop here and call it a success. If weather turns or energy drops, reverse the same way.
Optional
Rest of Tibrogargan Circuit
Only if everyone still wants to walk: continue the Grade 3 circuit around the base through casuarina, open eucalypt and melaleuca — changing profiles of Tibrogargan, often peregrine falcons overhead. Full loop 4.1 km, allow 1 hr 30 min total. Do not negotiate a “just a bit further” after kids are done.
Picnic
Trailhead tables — then the lookout drive
Eat food you brought at Tibrogargan picnic tables. Do not feed wildlife. Then drive to Glass House Mountains Lookout in Beerburrum West State Forest for the panorama. Different tenure, different car park. Picnic and toilets are usual; BBQs at this lookout are closed 20 Aug 2026–21 Feb 2027 (official alert 26896). Stay back from edges; this is a view stop, not a second bushwalk.
Leave
Daylight reverse — no summit add-on
Clean footwear again as you leave the park. Full water and snack check before the highway. Do not “just quickly” add Ngungun Summit after a family circuit — Grade 4 cliffs are a different product. Off the peaks before dark. Overnight camping is not available in this national park; Coochin Creek (Beerwah State Forest) is official-only via qld.gov.au/camping if that was always the plan.
Packing

Parking & access tips
- Tibrogargan trailhead via Marshs Road and Barrs Road — not the Ngungun or Beerwah car parks.
- Weekends and school holidays fill early; have a lookout-only shrink plan if the circuit car park is tight.
- Picnic tables and toilets are at this trailhead — use them; do not assume every peak has facilities.
- Glass House Mountains Lookout is a separate state-forest car park — do not walk there from Tibrogargan.
- Do not leave bags visible in the car.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Mount Ngungun Summit (Grade 4, cliffs) on the same afternoon
- Yul-yan-man Track or any Grade 5 scramble
- Mount Coonowrin — Restricted Access, closed, on-the-spot fines
- Promising a wheelchair-accessible walking track (official: none in this national park)
- Late start with no plan to be back in daylight
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Families from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast who want volcanic-peak views without a cliff walk
- Mixed mobility groups who will treat Mountain View lookout as a complete walk if needed
- First visits that should learn separate trailheads before stacking summits
- Anyone who will watch the official safety video even on a “easy” day
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If Park Alerts show closures: shrink or change — do not make up an off-track alternative
- If kids are done at Mountain View lookout: reverse — the lookout drive still counts
- If someone wants Ngungun “because we’re here”: that is a different morning, different trailhead
- If Coonowrin looks climbable from the picnic table: it is still closed
What success looks like
- Everyone off the peaks in daylight, still civil
- One honest Tibrogargan section (lookout or full circuit) plus the state-forest panorama
- Footwear cleaned in and out; no wildlife feeding
- Notes for next time: earlier Ngungun morning, not a stacked hero afternoon
