Brisbane day trip: one trailhead, daylight reverse
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
About 70 km / one hour from Brisbane: optional Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre (township, outside the park) → pick ONE trailhead (Ngungun or Tibrogargan) → picnic → leave before dark. No camping in this NP.

This is the common Brisbane plan, and the one that fails when groups treat “only an hour up the Bruce” as licence to stack two summits, a lookout, and a late highway drive. Official orientation: about 70 km, or a one-hour drive, north of Brisbane — in light traffic. Add Friday peak, roadworks and a missed exit, and the walk shrinks.
Optional first stop: Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre at Settler’s Rotary Park, Bruce Parade / Reed Street, in Glass House Mountains township. It is outside the national park boundary — useful orientation, not a trailhead.
Then pick one trailhead. Ngungun Summit (Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hr) or Tibrogargan Circuit (Grade 3, 4.1 km, allow 1 hr 30 min, or the short Mountain View lookout). Separate sealed roads. You cannot park once and walk every peak.
Day entry is free — confirm on parks.qld.gov.au (re-checked 13 September 2026). No camping inside this national park. Watch the safety video. Check Park Alerts the morning you leave. This is unofficial planning, not a booked tour.
Track status, weather, camping availability and road conditions change — verify on Queensland Parks and live road sources before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day use does not mean free camping or empty car parks on holidays.

Timeline
Night before
One trailhead, one leave-by time
Watch the official safety video. Check Park Alerts, BOM and qldtraffic. Choose Ngungun or Tibrogargan — not both. Write a leave-Brisbane time and a leave-the-peaks time (daylight only). Pack water, sun kit, enclosed shoes, first aid, offline maps. Coonowrin is closed. No “we’ll camp if we’re late” — camping is not permitted in this national park.
Morning
Bruce Highway north
Allow ~70 km / ~1 hour plus buffer. Glass House Mountains tourist drive / Steve Irwin Way exits, then local sealed roads. Fuel and food in a plains or hinterland town (Beerwah and others). Do not burn the morning on a long Brisbane café if you chose Ngungun in summer heat.
Optional
Visitor centre (township — outside the park)
Settler’s Rotary Park, Bruce Parade corner Reed Street. Orientation only. If the queue or coffee eats the morning, skip it — the trailhead is the day. This centre is not QPWS park entry and not a substitute for Park Alerts.
Walk
One trailhead only
Ngungun: Grade 4 summit, cliffs, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hr — early start. Or Tibrogargan: Grade 3 circuit or short lookout, toilets and picnic at the car park. Clean footwear. Stay on track. Do not add the other peak because you finished 40 minutes ahead of your ego.
Afternoon
Picnic, then the lookout only if time remains
Eat at Tibrogargan tables if that was your trailhead, or in the township. Optional Glass House Mountains Lookout (Beerburrum West State Forest) only if the walk finished cleanly and you still have daylight. It is a separate drive, not a walking link.
Leave
Highway before dark and before fatigue
Clean footwear as you leave the park. Southbound Bruce in Friday traffic is part of the day. Headlamp in the bag is backup, not a plan to finish a summit at dusk. Coochin Creek camping (Beerwah State Forest) is official-only via qld.gov.au/camping — never a spontaneous NP camp.

Parking & access tips
- One car park: Ngungun or Tibrogargan — decide before you leave Brisbane.
- Visitor centre parking is in the township, not at a peak.
- Weekend Ngungun fills early; have Tibrogargan as the honest Plan B.
- Beerwah trailhead is a different node (short Mount Beerwah view walk) — do not mix the pins.
- Do not leave valuables visible.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Two summits plus Yul-yan-man because “it’s only an hour from Brisbane”
- Starting after a late city brunch in summer
- Mount Coonowrin — Restricted Access, closed
- Assuming you can camp in the national park if you run out of daylight
- Severe weather, fire or closures on Park Alerts
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Brisbane and northern-suburb first-timers
- Sunshine Coast visitors who still need a leave-by time
- Groups who will pick Ngungun or Tibrogargan and mean it
Decision gates
- If traffic ate the morning: Tibrogargan lookout, not Ngungun at midday
- If rain: postpone summits; wet rock is official caution
- If someone wants “the closed one” in the skyline: still no
- If energy is high after one walk: lookout drive or ice-cream — not Grade 5
What success looks like
- One complete walk, not three abandoned trailheads
- Home in daylight-ish traffic with the group still civil
- Dieback clean; safety video watched
- Notes for a two-peak day on a different, earlier calendar date

- Mount Ngungun Summit WalkPrimary signature walk: Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours from the Ngungun trailhead. Open forest with fern understorey, a viewpoint of Tibrogargan, a small rock overhang, then summit views of Tibrogargan, Coonowrin and Beerwah (Ngungun is about 253 m). Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This is a graded summit walk, not a family stroll and not a technical climb.
- Tibrogargan CircuitSecondary signature: Grade 3, 4.1 km circuit, allow 1 hour 30 minutes around the base of Tibrogargan. About 1 km / 20 minutes to Mountain View lookout with views of Beerwah, Coonowrin, Tibberoowuccum and Tunbubudla. Casuarina, open eucalypt and melaleuca forest; peregrine falcons often seen. Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This circuit is not the Tibrogargan summit route.
