Itineraries

These plans are for real days around Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Beerburrum and Brisbane — drive time, heat, wet rock and energy included — not a “do every peak” list. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free planner PDF / HTML anytime.

Every itinerary defers to Queensland Parks for track status and alerts. Camping is not permitted inside this national park. Mount Coonowrin is Restricted Access — closed, fines. Longer Grade 5 walking only appears where the plan names it — and only when official status is open.

Which plan fits you?

  • Family circuit & lookout — Mountain View lookout, picnic, Glass House Mountains Lookout (state forest). No Grade 4 summit.
  • Ngungun summit morning — fit first visit, classic plug panorama, daylight reverse.
  • Brisbane day trip — one trailhead, ~70 km / ~1 hour each way, leave before dark.
  • Two-peak day — Ngungun plus Tibrogargan only if you started early and both groups are honest about energy.
  • Advanced Yul-yan-man — Grade 5 scrambling, extra water, a leave-by time. Not a first afternoon.

If two plans both sound good, pick the shorter one. You can always do more on the ground; you cannot invent daylight for the drive home to Brisbane.

Mount Tibrogargan viewed from Mount Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Queensland

3–5 hours including drives between separate trailheads

Family circuit: Mountain View lookout & Glass House Mountains Lookout

Families and mixed groups who want peak views without a Grade 4 summit

Tibrogargan Circuit short option to Mountain View lookout (~1 km / 20 min, or the full 4.1 km Grade 3 circuit), picnic at the trailhead, then Glass House Mountains Lookout in adjoining Beerburrum West State Forest — not a Ngungun or Yul-yan-man day.

Mount Beerwah and Mount Coonowrin from Mount Ngungun, Glass House Mountains National Park

Half day on the mountain (Grade 4, allow 2 hr walking + buffers)

Summit morning: Mount Ngungun

Reasonably fit walkers who want the classic peak panorama without Grade 5 scrambling

Early Ngungun Summit (Grade 4, 2.8 km return, allow 2 hours) while it is cooler and quieter — cliffs, wet-rock slip, clean footwear, daylight only — then leave before you add a second peak you did not plan.

Forest at the Mount Beerburrum section entrance, Glass House Mountains National Park

Full day (Grade 5, 6.7–13.4 km depending on start, 3–5+ hours)

Advanced scramble: Yul-yan-man day

Experienced walkers with real rock-scrambling skills — not a first Glass House day

Grade 5 Yul-yan-man with optional Beerburrum↔Tibrogargan car shuffle, extra water, charged phone and PLB considered, pink triangular markers — do not start in rain, fire or extreme heat.

Long day house-to-house (~70 km / ~1 hr each way + one walk)

Brisbane day trip: one trailhead, daylight reverse

First-timers driving up from Brisbane who will pick one trailhead and leave before dark

About 70 km / one hour from Brisbane: optional Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre (township, outside the park) → pick ONE trailhead (Ngungun or Tibrogargan) → picnic → leave before dark. No camping in this NP.

Glass House Mountains viewed from Mary Cairncross Reserve, Queensland

Full day with a pre-dawn start and a hard daylight finish

Two-peak day: Ngungun + Tibrogargan (honest stacking)

Fit groups who already know one trailhead and will turn around in time

Ngungun Summit first, then Tibrogargan Circuit — or swap the second peak for Beerburrum summit / Trachyte Circuit / Jack Ferris — only with an early start, separate car parks, and no Grade 5 add-on.

A tour does not replace checking Queensland Parks alerts, weather, or wet-rock safety yourself.

What to bring

Practical kit for summit walks, wet volcanic rock and hinterland heat

  • Trail shoes with gripSteep concrete on Beerburrum and exposed rock on Ngungun — fashion sneakers fail when wet
  • Extra drinking waterHeat radiates off volcanic rock; carry more than a city-walk bottle, especially Grade 4–5
  • Sun hat + high SPFSummit and circuit sections are often unsheltered — cool breeze is not a UV free pass
  • Charged phone + power bankYul-yan-man official advice is a fully charged phone; 000 still needs reception
