Ngungun car park is full — Plan B
Weekend Ngungun bays fill. Do not verge-park, do not treat Coonowrin as a backup, and do not invent a second trailhead in heat. Not walked — planning from official Queensland Parks sources.

Beerwah and Coonowrin from Ngungun summit

Not walked — planning from official Queensland Parks sources. The Ngungun trailhead is a small sealed 2WD car park off Coonowrin Road and Fullertons Road, about 3 km from Glass House Mountains township. It is a walk start, not a picnic campus and not a overflow street. When the bay is full, the failure is already underway: people park on the verge, block emergency access, or “just have a look” at closed Coonowrin because the summit walk did not start.
Official advice is daylight hours only, stay on the published Grade 4 track, and treat Mount Coonowrin as Restricted Access — public access prohibited, on-the-spot fines. This article is the operator reverse: if you cannot park legally at Ngungun, you do not do Ngungun today.
Who this is for
Anyone driving up from Brisbane on a fine weekend with only Ngungun in the notes. Mixed groups who will not reverse. People who treat a full car park as a queue, not a decision.
What “full” actually means here
There is no through-park road and no second Ngungun overflow lot published as official day-use. The trailhead is the trailhead. If bays are taken, the legal move is to leave. Blocking access, parking on vegetation, or leaving a vehicle where a rescue truck cannot pass is how a short summit walk becomes a ranger problem.
Honest Plan B (same daylight)

Mount Tibrogargan from Beerburrum

Drive to the Tibrogargan trailhead (Marshs Road / Barrs Road) — picnic tables, toilets including an accessible cubicle, and Mountain View lookout in about 1 km / 20 minutes on the Grade 3 circuit. Reverse from the lookout without guilt. Optional panorama: Glass House Mountains Lookout in adjoining Beerburrum West State Forest (not this national park). Official alert 26896: BBQs at that lookout are not available 20 Aug 2026–21 Feb 2027 — picnic without the hotplate. Confirm live.
What is not Plan B
Mount Coonowrin is a Restricted Access Area — public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply. Do not enter. A view of Coonowrin from Ngungun or the lookout is not permission. Do not walk the fence line “just to see.”
Yul-yan-man (Grade 5) is not a consolation scramble. Extra water, charged phone, consider a PLB — and a different fitness conversation. It does not absorb a late, frustrated group that already lost the morning to parking.
The 24-hour listing on the state-forest lookout is not a camping permit and not advice to walk Ngungun in the dark.
How to avoid the full bay
Leave Brisbane with a morning clock. Name Plan B before you leave the Bruce Highway. Screenshot the official map on town Wi-Fi. If you arrive and the bay is full, execute Plan B in the same hour — do not wait for someone to leave while heat builds on the plugs.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I wait in the car until a bay frees up?
A short wait in a legal space is different from blocking the road. If there is no legal space, leave for Tibrogargan or the state-forest lookout. Heat and weekend arrivals do not improve by sitting in the entrance.
Is the Glass House Mountains Lookout the same as Ngungun?
No. The lookout is in Beerburrum West State Forest on Glass House–Woodford Road — different tenure, different car park. It is a panorama stop, not a national-park summit tick.
If Ngungun is full, can we do Coonowrin instead?
No. Mount Coonowrin is Restricted Access. Public access is prohibited and on-the-spot fines apply.
Did you clock how early the car park fills?
No. This guide is not walked. Weekend filling is a planning pattern from official trailhead advice and visitor behaviour — not a stopwatch claim. Arrive early or name Plan B.
